Six modules. Everything a new supervisor needs to lead well.

Supervision covers a lot of ground — and most of it gets learned on the job. The Fundamentals of Supervision Certificate is for new supervisors and those ready to formalize what experience has taught them. From setting expectations and delivering feedback to motivating a team, managing performance, and delegating work effectively — the full scope of first-line leadership is covered. They'll head back to work with a practical framework and tools they can put to use immediately.

Participants leave ready to…

  • Set expectations with a new employee and spell out exactly what success looks like
  • Sit down with an employee and give feedback tied to a specific moment
  • Work through a team problem and land on the root cause
  • Create the conditions where each team member's motivation can take hold
  • Walk an employee through a performance conversation with a clear plan
  • Hand off a piece of work with clear parameters and full ownership

Certificate Snapshot

Instructor-led program (3 days / 18 hours), in-person or virtual.

Modules

  • Effective Supervision — Establishes the supervisory role, key leadership styles and power types, and how the balance between tasks and people shapes team performance.
  • Communicating Effectively — Builds core supervisor communication skills, including active listening, channel selection, coaching, feedback, and leading productive team meetings.
  • Problem Solving — Introduces a five-step problem-solving process, key analysis tools, and practical decision-making strategies.
  • Motivating Your Employees — Translates major motivation theories into simple strategies to create environments where team members find their own drive, addressing both “can’t do” and “won’t do” patterns.
  • Managing Performance — Walks through the full performance cycle: setting SMART goals, conducting evaluations, handling tough conversations, documenting effectively, and using progressive discipline when needed.
  • Delegating the Work — Builds supervisors’ time-management and delegation skills, using the Eisenhower Matrix and a step-by-step process to hand off work and overcome barriers to letting go.

Where This Fits

This is the foundational certificate in Catapult’s management and leadership series, The Management Advantage, built for new supervisors and those ready to formalize what experience has taught them. The Relational Leader Certificate (Advanced Management I) is the natural next step when they’re ready to go deeper on the people side of leadership — feedback, coaching, difficult conversations, and building inclusive teams.
