Before diving into data analysis, it’s critical to ensure your data is both accurate and usable. In this course, you’ll learn key techniques to clean and manage "dirty data" that can hinder the analysis process. While preventing messy data is ideal, this course will equip you with practical, proven methods to transform inconsistent and inaccurate data into clean, reliable datasets.
This course will help you establish best practices for data cleaning, ensuring accuracy and consistency in your datasets for effective analysis.
Prerequisites: The course requires that you have successfully completed Excel I and II.
Contents:
Remove Unnecessary Data
- Save a copy of your data in a new tab or separate workbook
- Unhide all hidden rows, columns, and sheets
- Remove irrelevant or unnecessary columns
- Delete blank rows
- Run a spell check
- Remove extra spaces
- Eliminate labels or unnecessary prefixes/suffixes
- Identify and remove duplicate entries
Correct Data Inaccuracies
- Use Find and Replace to update incorrect values
- Parse (separate) data into multiple columns
- Combine data when necessary
- Manage missing values or blank cells effectively
- Standardize Data Formatting
- Apply consistent capitalization
- Convert data to the correct types (e.g., date, number, text)
- Remove unnecessary formatting
- Format data to enhance readability and usability
- Copy and Paste as Values to preserve clean data
