What is HR help

HR help, in plain terms

HR help is direct access to a human HR expert when you have a workplace question you cannot afford to get wrong. At Catapult, it means the HR Advice Helpline: unlimited calls to senior HR advisors, included with every membership plan, for compliance, terminations, policy questions, and the situations that come up between meetings, with after-hours support for emergencies.

Who this is for

HR help for small businesses and the people who run them

Whether you run the company or you are the entire HR department.

For small business owners and leaders

Most small businesses do not have an HR department, so hiring, discipline and compliance land on you. You are not an HR person, and you should not have to become one to handle a termination correctly or answer a handbook question with confidence. Your HR Advisor is the person you call before a small decision becomes an expensive one.

  • A second opinion before a hard conversation
  • Plain-English answers, no legal jargon
  • Employment law backup when it is genuinely needed

For HR teams of one

You already know HR. What you need is HR support: someone to sanity-check a close call, cover the state you have never hired in, or take a question off your plate at 6pm. Think of it as HR support for small business teams stretched thin, not a replacement for your judgment.

  • Multi-state guidance without a retainer
  • Templates and tools you do not have to build
  • Someone senior to loop in on the hard ones

Questions members actually bring to their advisor

“Members bring questions like these to an advisor every day,” says Stephanie Dillon, Catapult’s Lead Senior HR Advisor. A few of the ones members search for first, with a full guide on each.

Do we have to pay employees when we close for weather?

It depends on exempt versus non-exempt status and how your policy is written, one of the most common calls advisors get every winter.

How do we manage an employee who needs multiple types of leave at once?

FMLA, ADA, and state leave can all apply to the same absence, and they do not always point to the same answer.

Read the full guide →

What are the most common FMLA mistakes employers make?

Most FMLA problems are not bad intentions, they are myths about who qualifies and what counts as notice.

How do I handle a termination the right way?

Documentation and consistency are what protect you, not the conversation itself.

Can we still use non-compete agreements?

The rules have shifted state by state and at the federal level, so “it depends where” is the honest short answer.

Do we still need to file an EEO-1 report?

Requirements here are in flux. Advisors track the current status so you do not have to.

How it works

Call, talk to a person, get a fast answer

1

Call and talk to a person

During business hours, 8:30 am to 5 pm ET, you reach a senior advisor directly. There is no ticket queue to sit in.

2

Reach a senior advisor

A real person who has handled your exact situation before, not a script or a chatbot.

3

Get a fast answer

Most questions resolve on that call. Call before 3:30 pm ET for the best chance of a same-day answer.

FAQ

Questions we hear most

How do I speak to HR about a problem?
If your company is a Catapult member, call your HR Advisor through the HR Advice Helpline included with your plan. Not a member yet? See membership plans or call (866) 440-0302 to talk it through first.
What can HR help me with?
Terminations, policy and handbook questions, multi-state compliance, performance management, and government agency letters like an EEOC or DOL notice. If a situation needs an attorney, your HR Advisor refers you to an employment lawyer at Ogletree Deakins as part of your membership.
Is HR help for small businesses too?
Yes. Most small businesses do not have an HR department, so terminations, leave requests and compliance questions land on the owner or an office manager. Standard membership ($2,850 a year) is built for exactly that, and it includes the same unlimited Helpline as every other plan. Companies join as a whole, so there is no per-seat cost.
Is the HR hotline for employees or for the employer?
It is for your organization, not for individual employees. Catapult’s HR Advice Helpline provides advice to Catapult member companies and the people who manage them, not direct advice to employees about their own personal situations.
Is there a ChatGPT for HR?
General AI tools can draft a policy or summarize a law, but they do not know your company, your state, or your risk. Catapult’s HR Advice Helpline is answered by senior human HR advisors who can ask follow-up questions and take responsibility for the answer, which is the part a chatbot cannot do.
What are HR trigger words?
These are phrases in an employee complaint or conversation that signal legal risk and should prompt a manager to loop in HR immediately, things like mentions of pregnancy, disability, religion, a protected leave, harassment, or retaliation. If you are not sure whether something you heard qualifies, that is exactly the kind of question the Helpline is for.

The next HR question does not wait. Neither should you.

Every plan includes the HR Advice Helpline, with after-hours support for emergencies. Pick the one that fits your team.
