What drives cost

Why one background check costs more than another

Two candidates at the same company can cost very different amounts to screen. These are the five things that move the number.

How many counties you have to searchCounty level search is priced per county at $16.00 for members. A candidate who has lived in one county for a decade costs far less to search than one who has moved four times in seven years, because each county is a separate search.
How many past employers you verifyEmployment verification is priced per company. Verifying three employers costs three times verifying one. In-depth verification, which goes beyond dates and title, is $22.00 for members against $10.00 for the basic version.
Whether the role needs statewide or federal coverageNorth Carolina statewide is $11.00 for members. Other states run $17.75 plus a state fee, and federal court nationwide is $16.50. A multi-state index at $21.00 is broader but is a pointer search, not a substitute for confirming at the county source.
Whether the record sits behind a government feeSome states and counties charge their own access fee for criminal records and motor vehicle reports. Those are passed through at actual cost, so the line item says plus state fee rather than pretending the fee does not exist.
Regulated extras the role requiresHealthcare roles add sanctions screening. Driving roles add a motor vehicle report. Roles with financial responsibility may add credit history, which carries a one-time $125 setup fee before the first file can be pulled.
Building a package

What a typical package adds up to

These are illustrations built from the rates above at the member price, not fixed products. Your own package is priced on the searches your roles actually need.

Entry-level hire, one county

North Carolina statewide $11.00, one county level search $16.00, name and SSN verification $6.00, and the $3.00 applicant fee. Add one basic employment verification at $10.00 if the role needs work history confirmed.

Professional hire, multi-state history

Multi-state criminal records index $21.00 to point the search, two county level searches at $16.00 each, federal court nationwide $16.50, education verification $10.00, two basic employment verifications at $10.00 each, plus the $3.00 applicant fee.

Driving or healthcare role

Start from either package above, then add a motor vehicle report at $10.50 plus the state fee for driving roles, or FACIS Level 3 healthcare sanctions screening at $10.93 for roles that touch federal healthcare programs.

Every figure above is a member rate taken from the table. Send us the roles you hire for and we will price the actual package.

  • Searches marked plus state fee carry a government fee that varies by state and is passed through at cost.
FAQs

Background check cost questions

How much does a background check cost?
It depends on which searches the role needs, because Catapult prices per search rather than per bundle. A single North Carolina statewide criminal search is $11.00 for members and $13.29 otherwise, plus a $3.00 applicant fee. A typical multi-search package for a professional hire lands higher because it adds county searches, federal court, and verifications. The full rate table is above.
How much does an employment background check cost per employee?
Per employee, the floor is one criminal search plus the $3.00 applicant fee. From there the cost rises with the number of counties searched and the number of past employers verified, since both are priced per unit rather than as a flat rate.
Is there a minimum order or a monthly fee?
No. There is no minimum volume and no subscription required to order screening. The only recurring commercial relationship that changes your pricing is Catapult membership, which lowers the rate on every search.
What is the $3 applicant fee?
It is a flat per-applicant fee that applies to every person screened, on top of the individual searches ordered for them. It is charged once per applicant, not once per search.
Why do some prices say plus state fee?
Certain states and counties charge a government access fee for criminal records and motor vehicle reports. Those fees vary by jurisdiction and change without notice, so Catapult passes them through at actual cost rather than folding an average into the headline price.
How much do Catapult members save?
The member rate is lower on every line in the table. The saving is largest on the searches employers order most, such as North Carolina statewide, county level searches, and employment verifications.
Do you charge for a background check that comes back clear?
Yes. The price covers running the search, and a clear result is still a completed search with a documented result you can put in the file. That documentation is the point of screening in the first place.
What does credit history cost and why is there a setup fee?
Credit history is $10.50 for members and $15.00 otherwise, with a one-time $125 setup fee before a financial credit file can be pulled for the first time. The setup covers the credentialing the credit bureaus require of any employer pulling consumer credit data. Note that several states restrict employment credit checks, so confirm it is permitted for your role and location first.
Can you quote international searches?
International criminal records and international education verification are quoted case by case, because cost and turnaround depend heavily on the country and the institution involved. Contact us with the country and we will price it.
Are these prices guaranteed?
Background and reference checking service prices are subject to change without notice. Automated verifications, along with state and county taxes and fees, are billed at actual cost. The rates on this page are effective September 26, 2025.
