Why it matters

A license on a resume is a claim, not a credential

For licensed roles, the question is not whether someone was ever licensed. It is whether the license is valid today and whether anything has happened to it.

Licenses lapse quietlyA credential that was valid at hire can expire, be suspended, or be restricted without the employer hearing about it. Nobody sends you a notice.
Disciplinary history does not show on a criminal searchState boards record revocations, suspensions, probations, restrictions, and consent orders. None of that appears on a county criminal record search, so a clean background check tells you nothing about board standing.
Your own accreditation can be exposedIn licensed fields, employing someone whose credential has lapsed can put your billing, accreditation, or contract eligibility at risk, not just theirs.
Candidates misstate credentials more than employers expectClaiming a lapsed license as current, or a lesser credential as a higher one, is among the most common resume misstatements in licensed professions.

FAQs

License verification questions

How do you verify a licensed employee’s credentials?
We confirm the license directly with the issuing board rather than accepting a copy from the candidate, and we confirm its current standing rather than just that it was once issued. That includes status, issue and expiration dates, and any disciplinary history the board records.
How much does professional license verification cost?
$10.00 per verification for Catapult members and $12.00 otherwise, plus the $3.00 applicant fee that applies to every person screened. See full background check pricing.
Is this the same as education verification?
No, and most licensed roles need both. Education verification confirms the degree or diploma that qualified someone to sit for a license. License verification confirms the credential itself and its current standing with the board.
Do you verify licenses in every state?
Yes. Licensing is state by state, and a license valid in one state does not automatically transfer to another, so we verify with the specific issuing jurisdiction.
Will it show disciplinary action?
Where the board publishes or discloses it, yes. Revocations, suspensions, probations, restrictions, and consent orders are the records that matter most and they do not appear on a criminal background check.
How often should we re-verify?
At minimum before each renewal date, and many regulated employers re-verify annually or at each credentialing cycle. The expiration date returned in the verification is what you diary against.
